Chapter Six

High alert! High alert! My adrenaline couldn’t be tampered. The men in black were there for a purpose and it would take fast action to make sure that they failed at their mission.

Gertie and Ida Belle would return to the library soon. That is, if they didn’t bump into the strangers before they made it back. While my friends looked like two old maids that could barely swat at a fly, they were actually former covert operatives and had gained military training during the Vietnam War.

I was being kind. They probably served on the front lines during the Civil War.

Carter was a good ole boy, right down to his swagger, but when it came to protecting his town, he could put up a fight. I’d watched him in action. Me? I used a wide variety of weapons. I’d been known to kill with stilettos and hairpins. If it could be worn, it could be fatal.

Trained for CIA operations with a reputation for getting my guy, I would do whatever necessary to protect the innocent. Fortunately, since we now had our backs against the wall in this situation, I wouldn’t need to compromise. I had my nine. It was unnecessary to rely on weapons of chance and circumstance.

“Children, come with me,” I said, thinking it would be best to lock them in the storage room and guard the door. At least I could save these kids. The others in various parts of the school were another story. As soon as he returned, Carter and I would devise a plan to evacuate the school in a safe manner.

Reality struck as soon as Carter returned and nodded in confirmation. He had just opened his mouth to speak when someone sounded the alarm.

“Miss Morrow?” The student in the Christmas sweatshirt grabbed my hand. “Are we in trouble?”

“No,” I replied, searching Carter’s face and realizing that I’d just told the biggest fib of all. It was excusable given the situation. There was no way I would cause unnecessary fear. These kids deserved a fighting chance and fear bred chaos. Chaos stirred up a recipe for disaster.

The alarm resounded again. The students screamed and scattered.

“Wait!” I chased a couple of them to the exit.

“Quiet!” Carter stepped in front of the door. “Listen to Miss Morrow!”

I tried to steer the children to the back. For once, I wanted to listen to Carter. The quicker I could secure the students, the faster I could pull my nine and put it to good use.

“We’re under attack!” One of the taller students shoved his way through the line, trying to make it to the back hallway before the others.

“Everyone listen! I need you to calm down.” Carter turned to me. “Back room, Fortune. Now!”

“Use your inside voice, Carter,” I said, not easily pushed around by a guy with a badge.

Still, he didn’t need to tell me twice. The quicker I locked these students in that back room, the quicker I could fight the idiots who had dared to enter a school that had the best doggone protection this side of the bayou.
